Efficient and collaborative approach achieves best outcomes for our clients

At Consilium we pride ourselves on offering our clients uncompromising service and when it comes to VAT we know that the advice offered by VAT Services (Scotland) Ltd meets our strict criteria.

As a Scottish-based firm focusing on the needs of Scottish businesses, our philosophy is to understand our clients' needs and provide a service tailored to each client's requirements. When that involves delving into the most complicated areas of VAT we know Gary and his colleagues will find the correct path through the maze of legislation and lead our clients to the clarity they require. This is particularly crucial when deadlines are tight.

Our staff find them approachable, knowledgeable and easy to work with, which all helps to ensure an efficient and collaborative approach to achieve the best outcomes for our clients.

Successful withdrawal of £530k assessment issued by HMRC

VAT is a hugely complex area of tax and our access to the expertise and support offered by Gary and his colleagues ensures even the most challenging VAT issues facing our clients are dealt with quickly, accurately and professionally.

We have worked with VAT Services (Scotland) Limited for 11 years and greatly value their insight and professionalism. Because they deal only with VAT, they offer an in-depth knowledge of their area of expertise.

We at Wylie & Bisset are great believers that to ensure excellent client service we should utilise all our own resources and, where required, use specialist firms such as VAT Services (Scotland) Limited to support our own business offering. We have found their in-depth VAT knowledge to be a valuable addition to our own skills.

Recently HM Revenue & Customs sought to raise a VAT assessment of £393,000 on one of our clients. When penalties and interest were added, the total amount HM Revenue & Customs were seeking was £530,000. Utilising their knowledge of EU VAT legislation, and precedent ECJ case law, VAT Services (Scotland) Limited worked with us and our client to ensure HM Revenue & Customs withdrew its assessment. This was an excellent outcome for our client.

In-depth knowledge of land and property is invaluable to our staff and clients

We are delighted with the specialist VAT advice offered to us by VAT Services (Scotland) Limited over the past seven years.

In the ever-changing and complex world of VAT, we regularly engage the services of Gary and his colleagues for assistance on behalf of our clients. They provide a prompt response on a wide range of issues and their in-depth knowledge of land and property is invaluable to both our staff and clients.

They also provide us with valuable regular VAT updates, detailing changes in legislation, UK and European case law and tribunal decisions which could have an impact on our clients. These updates ensure the partners and staff are aware of the frequent changes within VAT and ensures our clients receive timely advice.

Negotiating with HMRC re client’s Option to Tax

Gary successfully acted on our client’s behalf with HMRC’s Option to Tax Unit. HMRC was disputing the date our client had Opted to Tax. This jeopardised £26,000 of input tax (VAT). However, after Gary’s intervention, the correct Option to Tax date was agreed and our client received its input tax (VAT) repayment. It was quickly apparent to me that Gary fully understood HMRC’s position outlined in its two-page letter. He was able to prepare a concise written reply to HMRC resulting in the subsequent repayment of £26,000 of input tax (VAT).

Proactive approach saved client £37,000

On a number of occasions, we have engaged VAT Services (Scotland) Limited to advise on complex client VAT issues and have always been impressed with the quality of service they provide. When we were looking for a second opinion in relation to a client’s dispute with HMRC, they highlighted areas which could assist in the argument and ultimately achieved a significant £37,000 reduction on HMRC’s figures. We engage VAT Services (Scotland) Limited when VAT matters are non-routine and complex and we would definitely use their services again in the future.
